Hua Hin is one of the original resorts of Thailand and the Royal Family have digs nearby. The old town close to the sea front is charming and there is a small bar area on the edge of this part of town.
A few clicks up the coast is the newish beach resort of Cha-Am. With a small bar area, including an almost gogo, and a few bars elsewhere
There are several golf courses in the area and there are good beaches on the outskirts of town. Hua Hin is a two-hour drive from Bangkok and there are several regular mini bus services.
There is also an airport, but all in all, road must normally be the quicker route.

Chiang Mai is a city built on the roots of a traditional heritage that dig deep into the soil of time. It's a city with a beautiful cultural personality of its own. In addition, it's been blessed with much majestic beauty in nature. The people themselves are an unforgettable part of Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of silk, silver and wood are timeless souvenirs for visitors from all over the globe. Along with all this, a wide variety of accommodations, restaurants, and entertainment all help to make Chiang Mai one of Thailand's prime tourist attractions. (I borrowed this from TAT)
There is a good sprinkling of bars around the town center. The nightlife is better than one might expect.
The only real way to get there is by air from Bangkok, although Bangkok Air also operates some regional routes with an indirect flight from Phuket being an option. There are buses and trains that run but it is a long way!
In the town itself there are taxis and tuks tuks a plenty, however most of the action is within walking distance.
